A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
