Both Deceased Students Named in Brown University Incident as Police Press On With Manhunt for Killer.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's tragic incident in Providence were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter persisted following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect questioned in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.
Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences online, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.
Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
Nine more persons were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“There is a killer at large,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”
Community Anxiety
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our city”.
The gunman discharged a weapon inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that raided the hotel seized two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was detained, the news agency reported.
The Wounded Victims
Regarding the nine injured, one student was allowed to go home, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “She was famed for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.
