Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials expressed anger after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and penalized "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in defense or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives declared in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to execute orders that contravene the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Reaction
The clip reportedly provoke a furious reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified statement censuring the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our United States with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical digital publications and retract his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Strong Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as veterans and security experts who care for this United States and took an pledge to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"The significant point is that the president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the national charter and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's calls for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Political Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly informed the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and decide all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Does the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "There are sitting members of the federal government who conspired to organize a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally encouraging."
