Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
