The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
