Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
