Meteorologists are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather could to cause major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
