New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this race is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
