Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
