The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and asserted their relationship were “resilient to foreign coercion.”

The statement, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be a direct challenge at western countries, who have tried to urge New Delhi into curtailing its close ties with Moscow. The backdrop comes after recent US actions, notably additional trade penalties on India over its purchase of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a dependable source of oil and gas and anything required for the development of India’s industry,” Putin said. “Russia is prepared to continue securing the steady flow of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not mentioning oil explicitly, echoed the focus by stating that “a stable energy base has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the summit, via a TV appearance, Putin had criticized US interference on India's energy purchases. He argued, “If the US is entitled to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India have the identical right?”

This trip represented his maiden trip to India after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a clear effort to display that the personal rapport between the men remained intact.

A Personal Reception
