The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
